The Melon Heads Legend of Michigan is one of the state's most unique urban legends. According to local folklore, they are small, human-like beings with unusually large heads said to roam the woods near Saugatuck and the haunted Felt Mansion.

The legend of the Melon Heads has been passed down for decades through local storytelling, but there is no historical evidence that a hospital, asylum, or institution for hydrocephalic children ever existed in the area. Today, the Melon Heads remain an enduring piece of Michigan folklore.

The Melon Heads Legend of Michigan 

The Melon Heads legend comes out of Holland and Saugatuck, Michigan, and tells of a band of hydrocephalic children living deep in the woods around the Saugatuck State Park area. The medical condition causes an abnormal buildup of fluid in the brain, resulting in enlarged heads. According to the legend, this made them look like tiny, bulbous-headed creatures lurking in the forest, ready to appear when you least expect it. Or so the story goes...

The traditional version of the legend claims there was once a hospital in the area that cared for children with hydrocephalus. When the facility was forced to close, the children were supposedly abandoned and left to survive in the surrounding wilderness, where they gradually became the mysterious beings of local folklore.

For generations, people around Holland and Saugatuck have passed this story along. It was especially popular among teenagers during the 1960s and '70s, who dared one another to venture into the woods in search of the Melon Heads. Parents even used the legend to keep children in line, warning that the Melon Heads would come for them if they didn't go to bed. (My buddy Tom even pulled that one on his kids.)

Is there any truth to the Melon Heads Legend?

There are several different theories about where these creatures originated, but no doubt they sprang from the depths of the human imagination. Despite what many versions of the legend claim, there was never a hospital hidden in the Allegan County woods with a mad doctor treating children. Historical records simply don't support that story. Yet somehow the legend took hold and continues to be passed from one generation to the next through word of mouth, campfire tales, and websites like this one.

The origins of local legends are almost always murky, but watching how they evolve over time is what makes them so fascinating to study. Michigan's Melon Heads even have cousins in Ohio, where a similar legend tells of a mysterious Dr. Crow and the children he supposedly experimented on.

This has always been one of my favorite Michigan legends because it's just so wonderfully bizarre. I couldn't leave it out of my first book, Ghosts & Legends of Michigan's West Coast, where I explore origin theories and share some entertaining stories connected to the legend.

Since the book was published in 2009, however, fellow researcher Kevin Collier uncovered another possible explanation, one that, to me, makes the most sense.

According to Collier, the Melon Heads legend may have grown out of a nickname given to students who attended school at the Felt Mansion when it operated as a seminary. Local public school children reportedly called them "melon heads" because they were considered the "smart kids." This account came from someone who actually attended the seminary.

I love when a clue like this surfaces decades after a legend has already become established. It reminds us how easily stories change over time, picking up new details with each retelling until the original spark is almost unrecognizable. That's part of what makes folklore so endlessly fascinating.

How Do You Find the Melon Heads?

According to the legend, the Melon Heads lived in the woods near Saugatuck Dunes State Park, not far from the Felt Mansion. Because the mansion sat abandoned for many years and had such an eerie appearance, it's easy to see how the local legend became connected to the old estate. In reality, though, the only place you're likely to encounter the Michigan Melon Heads is in your own imagination.
